To assist your Executors with the digital aspect of your life it is always advisable to keep a hard copy written log of your digital assets including all logins and passwords. This will make their job less difficult. This should also be kept under regular review and a copy kept with your Will, though not attached to it.
This is also particularly important in relation to social media accounts such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn. Certain social media accounts do enable you within your account settings to nominate a person to control a 'memorial page' on death. This is known as a 'legacy contact feature'.
Many online accounts such as Yahoo, Microsoft and Google do now also have the ability within the account features to enable you to specify who you would be happy to have access to close the account on death and to terminate the licence. Such accounts cannot be gifted to another person.
Online banking accounts (that exist online only) do not generally offer such a facility hence again the importance of having a Will in place, naming your Executors as they can then simply contact the relevant provider with the Death Certificate and arrange for the account to be closed and monies paid to your estate.
