The journey to one’s final resting place is a significant and emotional moment. It often marks the start of the funeral service and offers an opportunity for friends and family to come together to honour a life well lived.

The funeral procession

A funeral procession is the formal journey from the place where the service begins to the burial or cremation site. It typically includes:

  • a hearse

  • funeral cars for close family and friends

  • mourners walking or standing along the route to pay their respects

  • a planned route that may pass meaningful locations from the person’s life.

This moment of remembrance and unity is often deeply moving for those in attendance.

Choosing the right transport

Funeral transport can be personalised to reflect the life, values and personality of the person who has passed away. While many people choose a traditional black hearse with floral tributes, there are several other meaningful options available.

Examples of personalised funeral transport

  • Horse-drawn hearse – for a traditional and elegant tribute

  • Motorcycle hearse – for someone with a love of bikes or the open road

  • Vintage cars or limousines – for a classic or luxurious feel

  • Bespoke vehicles – such as campervans, trucks or themed transport based on hobbies or interests.

Planning the funeral procession

Some of the details to consider include:

  • Number of vehicles – How many cars are needed for family and guests?

  • Vehicle type – Would you like a traditional hearse or a specialist vehicle?

  • Cortège participants – Who will follow the hearse, and how will they travel?

  • Route – Are there specific places you’d like the cortège to pass?

  • Floral tributes – Would you like flowers displayed in the hearse or on the vehicles?
